Harvey Vale: Rising Star Commits to Republic of Ireland
The Republic of Ireland national team has gained a promising new talent in Harvey Vale, the 22-year-old midfielder from Queens Park Rangers. While his inclusion in the squad for the upcoming World Cup play-off semi-final against the Czech Republic wasn’t entirely unexpected, the swiftness of his allegiance switch from England has generated considerable interest.
From Chelsea Academy to QPR
Vale’s journey began in the youth academies of Fulham and Chelsea, where he signed his first professional contract in September 2020.[1] Although he made a limited number of first-team appearances for Chelsea – a total of seven across various competitions including the Conference League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup – he gained valuable experience through loan spells at Hull City and Bristol Rovers. It’s since joining Queens Park Rangers in February 2025 that Vale has truly begun to shine.[1] He has become a regular fixture in the QPR lineup, starting in the full 90 minutes of eight of their last ten league games. His form was underscored by a standout performance against Leicester City on March 16, 2026, where he opened the scoring in a 3-1 victory. Vale latched onto a long pass, skillfully chipped the goalkeeper, and slotted the ball home. He similarly contributed to QPR’s second goal with a cross that resulted in an own goal, and delivered an assist from a corner.[2]

Vale’s eligibility to represent the Republic of Ireland stems from his Irish-born grandfather.[2] The switch of allegiance was formally approved by FIFA last week, paving the way for his inclusion in Heimir Hallgrimsson’s squad. Hallgrimsson initiated discussions with Vale about representing Ireland approximately a year ago.[2]
Hallgrimsson believes Vale is best suited to a central midfield role, despite his versatility and recent appearances on the right wing for QPR.[2] The manager has drawn comparisons between Vale and Finn Azaz of Southampton, noting their intelligence, quick thinking, and ability to both create and score goals.[2]

The Republic of Ireland faces a crucial World Cup play-off semi-final against the Czech Republic on March 26, 2026, with a potential final against Denmark or North Macedonia to follow.[2] Hallgrimsson has expressed his trust in all the uncapped players in the squad, including Vale, suggesting he is not hesitant to give them an opportunity on the field.[2]
