Mergault was known for her diverse talents as an actress, director, screenwriter, and radio personality. She gained recognition for her comedic roles and later achieved success directing the film Je vous trouve très beau, for which she won a César Award for Best First Feature. She was also a familiar voice on the popular French radio show Les Grosses Têtes.

Born in Paris in 1958, Mergault began her career in the late 1970s. She embraced her distinctive speech, characterized by a dyslalia affecting the pronunciation of “ch” and “j” sounds, turning it into a recognizable trait in her performances. Her early roles included appearances in films such as L’entourloupe (1980) and Men Prefer Fat Girls (1981).
Notable Roles and Directorial Work
Mergault’s performance as a natural sciences teacher in Profs (1985), where she famously imitated a dove and playfully mispronounced “tawny owl” as “nice panties,” contributed to the film’s success, attracting 2.8 million viewers.
As a director, she helmed Je vous trouve très beau alongside Michel Blanc, as well as Enfin veuve, Donnant donnant, and Des mains d’or (2023), featuring Lambert Wilson and Josiane Balasko.

According to reports, Mergault had been battling lung cancer that had metastasized to her liver. She kept her health condition private from her colleagues at RTL, despite fighting the disease for several months. She was hospitalized at Ambroise-Paré hospital in Neuilly-sur-Seine in her final weeks.
