Modi and Pezeshkian Discuss West Asia Conflict, Shipping Concerns

New Delhi – Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday, March 21, 2026, exchanging Eid and Nowruz greetings amidst escalating tensions in West Asia. The conversation focused on the evolving regional situation, attacks on critical infrastructure, and the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz.

Growing Concerns Over Regional Stability

The Prime Minister conveyed his concerns regarding recent attacks on “critical infrastructure” in the region, which he stated pose a threat to regional stability and disrupt global supply chains (The Economic Times). He reiterated the importance of ensuring shipping lanes remain open and secure (Indian Express).

Iran’s Perspective on the Conflict

According to a statement released by the Iranian Embassy in India, President Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran did not initiate the current conflict. He outlined what he described as “aggression, unlawful attacks, and crimes committed by the U.S. And the Zionist regime,” stating that attacks occurred during ongoing nuclear negotiations and resulted in casualties, including civilians and schoolchildren, as well as damage to public infrastructure.

Call for BRICS Role and Regional Security Framework

President Pezeshkian too appealed to India, as the rotating president of BRICS, to play an independent role in halting aggression against Iran and safeguarding regional and international peace and stability. He proposed the establishment of a regional security framework composed of West Asian countries, aimed at ensuring peace through regional cooperation without foreign interference.

Second Conversation Since February 28th

This marks the second phone conversation between Prime Minister Modi and President Pezeshkian since the outbreak of the conflict on February 28th, when the US and Israel launched attacks against Iran (India Today). On March 12th, President Pezeshkian briefed Prime Minister Modi on the situation in Iran and shared his perspective on recent developments.

India’s Concerns Over Shipping Disruptions

Concerns are growing over potential disruptions to international trade, with more than 20 Indian vessels currently in the Persian Gulf and potentially affected by issues in the Strait of Hormuz (PTC News). Prime Minister Modi underscored the importance of protecting freedom of navigation and ensuring the secure movement of goods.

Appreciation for Iranian Support

Prime Minister Modi also expressed his appreciation for Iran’s continued support for the safety and security of Indian nationals in Iran (India Today).
