Belgian Girl, 6, Dies in Barcelona Following Cancer Battle
Barcelona/Zonhoven – Inez Aerts, a 6-year-ancient girl from Zonhoven, Belgium, has died in Barcelona after complications following surgery for a rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer, neuroblastoma. The tragic news was confirmed on Saturday, March 22, 2026, by multiple news outlets VRT News and Nieuwsblad.
A Courageous Fight Against Neuroblastoma
Inez was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in December 2023 and underwent intensive treatment, including chemotherapy, surgery, stem cell transplants and radiation. When these treatments proved insufficient, her parents sought additional therapies abroad, leading them to Barcelona. VRT News reports that a recent surgery in Barcelona had initially appeared successful, with her mother reporting the removal of cancer from her abdomen. However, an internal bleed proved fatal.
Community Support and Fundraising
The cost of Inez’s treatment prompted her parents to launch a crowdfunding campaign a year ago. The campaign garnered significant support, raising 300,000 euros, fueled by numerous fundraising events and a benefit concert by singer Camille. VRT News highlighted the overwhelming solidarity shown by the community.
Remembering Inez
Those who knew Inez remember her as a joyful and vibrant girl with a passion for drawing, biking, dancing, singing, baking, balloons, and sidewalk chalk. Her parents established the non-profit organization ‘Een lichtje voor Inez’ (A Light for Inez) to support her treatment and assist others facing similar challenges. VRT News
