The Enduring Legacy of Sumerian Base-60 Numeracy
For millennia, humans have grappled with systems of counting and measurement. While the decimal system (base-10) dominates modern life, a lesser-known yet profoundly influential system – the sexagesimal system (base-60) – originated with the ancient Sumerians and continues to shape our world today, most notably in our measurement of time and angles.
A System Rooted in Ancient Mesopotamia
The Sumerians, who flourished in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) from around the 4th millennium BCE, developed a sophisticated mathematical system based on 60. Unlike our familiar base-10 system, where we group numbers in powers of ten (10, 100, 1000, etc.), the Sumerians grouped in powers of sixty. This means that when they reached 59, instead of carrying over to the next hundred, they “carried over” to the next group of sixty.
“The Sumerians used 60 in a comparable way to how we now use 10,” explains Erica Meszaros, who completed her doctorate in history of the exact sciences and antiquity at Brown University. “When we reach nine, we move over a space to the left, write a one and add zero to the right. [It’s the] same thing with sexagesimal: they get up to 59 and instead of having a number higher than 59 they just use a one, but one place over.”
Why Base-60? The Advantages of Divisibility
The precise origins of the Sumerian base-60 system remain somewhat mysterious. “There’s not a tonne of evidence where 60 itself comes from,” says Monroe, a researcher studying ancient Mesopotamian civilizations. Some scholars suggest the system may predate the Sumerians themselves. Still, its practical advantages are clear.
Sixty is divisible by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, and 60 – a far greater number of divisors than 10, which is only divisible by 1, 2, 5, and 10. This ease of division made it exceptionally useful for practical applications like accounting, taxation, land measurement, and inheritance calculations. As Meszaros notes, “If you’re developing numbers for remarkably practical purposes… having an easy way to do these mathematical operations can be really helpful.”
From Sumer to Modernity: Time and Angles
The Babylonian civilization, which succeeded the Sumerians, adopted and refined the sexagesimal system. While there’s no definitive evidence the Sumerians themselves used a concept of time as we understand it, the Babylonians developed early timekeeping methods, including sundials and water clocks around 1000 BCE.
The Babylonian sexagesimal system directly influenced how we divide time into 60 seconds, 60 minutes, and 360 degrees in a circle. These divisions, deeply ingrained in our modern systems, are a lasting legacy of ancient Mesopotamian mathematics. Despite the convenience of the decimal system for many calculations, the sheer ubiquity of these sexagesimal divisions makes a complete shift impractical.

The Sumerian base-60 system stands as a testament to the ingenuity of early mathematicians. Its influence extends far beyond ancient history, continuing to shape our daily lives through the very fabric of how we measure time and space. While the reasons for its initial adoption may remain partially obscured by time, its practical benefits and enduring legacy are undeniable.
