Fair City Star Bryan Murray Moves to Full-Time Care Amid Alzheimer’s Battle

Actor Bryan Murray, known for his two-decade-long role as Bob Charles in the Irish television soap opera Fair City, has moved to full-time care as his battle with Alzheimer’s disease progresses, his partner Úna Crawford O’Brien confirmed.

Murray was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2019, but continued to appear on Fair City before publicly sharing his diagnosis in 2022 to raise awareness of the disease and support others facing similar challenges [RTÉ].

A Difficult Decision

Crawford O’Brien, who similarly stars in Fair City as Renee Phelan, described the decision to move Murray into full-time care as “the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make” [RTÉ]. She explained that his condition “galloped” over the past year, making it increasingly difficult to provide the level of care he required [RTÉ].

“I think it was probably the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make because I really thought I could cope,” Crawford O’Brien said. “I knew I was a strong person…so I was determined to look after Bryan myself, but I just couldn’t in the end.” [RTÉ]

Changes in Murray’s Condition

Crawford O’Brien shared that Murray’s mood had become unpredictable and he sometimes experienced anger and confusion. She described instances where she was unsure how to respond to his questions, creating a stressful environment for both of them [RTÉ].

She noted that while Murray may not always recognize her, he consistently responds positively to their dog, Bob, often calling for him during walks [Irish Mirror]. “The only person that he calls by name now is Bob,” Crawford O’Brien stated [Irish Mirror].

Retirement and Support

Murray retired from Fair City in April 2025 after publicly disclosing his Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2022 [RSVP]. Crawford O’Brien emphasized the crucial support they received from family, friends, and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland [RSVP].

The show’s scriptwriters were also commended for their sensitivity in writing Murray’s character out of the series [RTÉ].

Finding Joy in Visits

Despite the challenges, Crawford O’Brien finds solace in visiting Murray and being able to bring moments of joy to his life. She shared that they can still laugh, sing songs, and enjoy each other’s company, even if their conversations are often nonsensical [RTÉ].
