Quadruple Amputee Cornhole Champion Charged with Murder in Maryland
Dayton James Webber, 27, a professional cornhole player and quadruple amputee, has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of Bradrick Michael Wells, 27, of Waldorf, Maryland. The incident occurred Sunday night in La Plata, Maryland, and Webber is currently being held as a fugitive from justice in Charlottesville, Virginia, pending extradition.
Details of the Shooting
According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, Webber allegedly shot Wells, who was a passenger in his vehicle, during an argument. WJLA News reports that the shooting took place on La Plata Road and Radio Station Road. Two other passengers were in the back seat of the vehicle and witnessed the shooting.
The witnesses reported the incident to the La Plata Police Department, and subsequently flagged down officers. They also reported that Webber asked for their help in disposing of the body, but they refused.
Approximately two hours after the shooting, authorities discovered Wells’ body in a yard in Charlotte Hall, Maryland. He was pronounced dead at the scene. ABC News detailed the sequence of events.
Arrest and Charges
Detectives obtained a warrant for Webber’s arrest and located his vehicle at a gas station in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Charles County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Webber was found at a nearby hospital seeking treatment for a medical issue and was taken into custody upon his release.
Charles County is seeking Webber’s extradition from Virginia, where he will face charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and related offenses.
Webber’s Background
Webber gained recognition as a champion cornhole player despite losing his arms and legs as a baby due to a bacterial infection. WJLA noted his inspirational story had previously been featured by ESPN. In a 2023 essay for the Today show, Webber described his medical challenges and his improbable journey to becoming a professional athlete.
American Cornhole League Statement
The American Cornhole League (ACL) released a statement on its Facebook page acknowledging the allegations involving Webber. Although, the ACL stated it would not comment further on the “active legal situation” while proceedings are ongoing. ABC News reported on the ACL’s response.
