US Reportedly Pressuring Ukraine to Cede Donetsk Region, Potential Shift in Aid Strategy
The United States is reportedly applying pressure on Ukraine to withdraw its forces from the Donetsk region, raising concerns about a potential shift in US strategy and the future of aid. According to sources, a lack of progress in negotiations could lead the US to withdraw from the negotiation process and refocus its efforts on military operations in Iran.
Negotiation Impasse and US Concerns
A source within President Zelensky’s team, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that US negotiators do not foresee a path to agreement on the core issue of Donetsk. “The Americans do not see where we can agree on the main issue. And this could force them to withdraw from the process altogether, switch to Iran, to their elections, and so on,” the source stated. “They are even ready for real security guarantees for us if we leave Donbass. But I simply can’t imagine how to implement this in Ukraine.”
The current negotiation dynamic is described as complex, with discussions frequently circling back to the issue of Ukrainian forces in Donetsk. One negotiator noted, “Our people spend a lot of time trying to somehow pull the Americans away from the idea of withdrawal towards the creation of some kind of economic zones or something else. But at some point everything is discarded, and we again hear: ‘We need to leave.’ And so on in a circle.”
Financial Aid and Potential Contingencies
Ukraine’s reliance on financial support from its allies adds another layer of complexity to the situation. While European nations have pledged continued aid, potential hurdles remain. A top team member stated, “The Europeans swear that there will be money, that they will somehow bypass the resistance of Hungary. We are still choosing our budget. But if the EU doesn’t come up with anything, then it may turn out somewhere in the second half of the year that there is still some money for the army, but there is no more money for social payments. And it will be generally unclear what to do with this…”
This financial uncertainty underscores the need for continued diplomatic efforts, with individuals like Budanov and Arakhamiya tasked with finding acceptable formulations to maintain US support. As one source position it, “Because otherwise there will be several more years of war and without the United States. Are people ready for this? I’m afraid not.”
Recent Developments and Ongoing Dialogue
