Vietnam-China Border Security Enhanced with Joint Patrols and Infrastructure Investment

Tuyen Quang Province, Vietnam – A delegation from Vietnam’s National Assembly Committee on National Defense, Security, and Foreign Affairs recently concluded a working session with the Thanh Thuy International Border Gate Border Guard Station, underscoring the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its border with China. The visit, which took place on March 24, 2026, focused on assessing security, border management, and infrastructure needs along the 31.252 km stretch of border managed by the station.

National Assembly Delegation Highlights Border Security

Led by Lieutenant General Nguyen Hai Hung, Vice Chairman of the Committee, the delegation included senior leaders and experts dedicated to evaluating the effectiveness of border protection measures. Representing Tuyen Quang province was Ms. Ma Thi Thuy, Member of the Provincial Party Committee, and Deputy Head of the Provincial Delegation of the National Assembly. The primary objective was to survey and assess the current security landscape and identify areas for improvement in border management and protection.

Focus on Border Management and Cooperation

During the working session, leaders of the Thanh Thuy International Border Gate Border Guard Station provided a comprehensive report covering border and boundary marker management, foreign relations with border counterparts, internal border security, and progress on territorial sovereignty protection. The station, located in Giang Nam village, Thanh Thuy commune, is responsible for a border area encompassing 44 border markers and bordering Mandong Township and Tianbao Town, Malipo County, Yunnan Province, China.

The delegation also acknowledged the positive impact of the dual local government system in strengthening stability and promoting socioeconomic development in the border regions. This collaborative approach has contributed to improved living standards and increased trust in the government among local communities.

Joint Patrols and International Cooperation

Reinforcing the commitment to collaborative security, the Thanh Thuy International Border Gate Border Guard Station recently conducted a joint patrol with Tianbao Border Police Station of China’s Tianbao Immigration Border Checkpoint. This joint effort, focused on the area between marker 260+500m and marker 261 (2), demonstrates a proactive approach to safeguarding the border area.

Infrastructure Development and Investment Requests

The Border Guard Station highlighted several key needs during the meeting, including investment in border patrol roads, access roads to border markers, and essential equipment for effective border patrol and protection. Requests were also made for continued funding for the removal of unexploded ordnance left over from past conflicts and for the implementation of reforestation projects in border areas. The station requested the establishment of clear guidelines for cooperation between local authorities on both sides of the border to facilitate the smooth handling of cross-border cases.

Economic Growth at Thanh Thuy International Border Gate

The Thanh Thuy International Border Gate is experiencing a surge in cross-border trade. Statistics from early 2026 show a 61% increase in customs declarations and a 132% rise in import-export turnover compared to the same period in 2024, reaching USD 355 million. Exports, particularly metallic antimony, tapioca starch, plywood, coffee, durians, and aluminum alloys, are driving this growth, with a 200% increase in export value.

National Assembly Support and Future Outlook

Lieutenant General Nguyen Hai Hung praised the Thanh Thuy International Border Checkpoint’s achievements in territorial sovereignty protection, border security, and international relations. He emphasized the importance of continued collaboration with local authorities and other units to proactively address emerging security challenges and foster socioeconomic development in the border region.

The National Assembly is also considering the investment in the Vinh – Thanh Thuy expressway, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and connectivity in the region.
