Is the French Education System Always in Crisis? An Historical Perspective

The French school system is currently facing numerous challenges – teacher shortages, declining academic levels, and funding issues. But is the current state of affairs truly exceptional, or has the French education system always been in crisis? A socio-historical analysis offers valuable insights into this question.

A Historian’s Perspective: Sébastien-Akira Alix

Sébastien-Akira Alix, Professor of Education Sciences at the University of Paris-Est Créteil, explores these questions in his research. He directed the work Crises dans et hors l’école en France, Éclairages socio-historiques (Crises in and outside of school in France, Socio-historical perspectives), published in February by Presses universitaires du septentrion.

Research Focus and Expertise

Alix’s research takes a socio-historical, transnational, and comparative approach, focusing on the circulation of ideas, actors, knowledge, techniques, and practices within education. His work examines educational policies and the history of education in both France and the United States. He pays particular attention to progressive school reform movements aimed at centering education on the supposed needs of students, as well as contemporary transformations and crises within education systems.

Teaching and Administrative Responsibilities

Alix’s teaching activities primarily focus on the history of education, comparative analysis of educational systems (particularly French and American), the study of public policies and school reforms, and research methodology. He teaches at the Licence (Bachelor’s) and Master’s levels.

Since 2022, Alix has served as the head of studies for the Department of Education and Social Sciences (SESS) and is a member of the management team of the UFR SESS-STAPS. Since 2024, he has been an assessor responsible for the co-design of the training offer with the Vice-Presidency for Education and the Commission for Education and University Life (CFVU) of the UPEC.

Professional Profile

Sébastien-Akira Alix is based in the Paris area and has a network of 481 professional connections on LinkedIn. He is also a contributor to The Conversation, where he publishes articles on education-related topics.
