Asia’s Largest Art Fair, Art Basel Hong Kong, Opens with Strong Regional Focus
Art Basel Hong Kong, Asia’s premier art fair, opened at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on March 25, 2026, with a VIP preview. The event is being closely watched as a key indicator of the art market’s continued recovery amid global economic uncertainties and geopolitical challenges.
This year’s edition features 240 galleries from 41 countries and territories, maintaining a similar scale to the previous year. Notably, over half of the participating galleries are based in the Asia-Pacific region, reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as a central hub for the Asian art market. Asia Economy reports the fair attracts approximately 80,000 visitors annually, with transactions valued around 1 trillion won.
Korean Gallery Presence
Eighteen Korean galleries are participating, with a special focus on the work of the late artist Kang Seo-kyung. Several Korean galleries have prominent booths in the “Galleries” sector, including:
- Arario Gallery: Showcasing works by Lee Jin-ju, Baek Jeong-ki, and Park Woong-gyu.
- Gallery Baton: Exhibiting works by their represented artists.
- Hakgojae Gallery: Featuring pieces by Nam June Paik, Seok-nam Yoon, Hyun-sook Song, and Young-ju Jeong, spanning multiple eras.
- Johyun Gallery: Presenting a collection from artists including Kim Tschang-yeul, Park Seo-bo, Lee Bae, and Kang Kang-hoon.
- PKM Gallery: Displaying works by Yoo Young-guk, Yun Hyeong-geun, Lee Geun-min, and Lee Won-woo.
- Kukje Gallery: Exhibiting works by Ha Jong-hyun, Kim Yun-sin, Park Chan-kyung, Yang Hye-gyu, and Jangpa.
Featured Artists and Sections
The fair highlights works by prominent artists such as Park Seo-bo, as noted by Sedaily. The “Encounters” section, curated by Mami Kataoka and a collective, features large-scale installations, including a multimedia textile installation by Suki Seokyeong Kang (Kukje Gallery), a yarn-based installation by Parag Tandel (Tarq), and glazed ceramic sculptures by Masaomi Yasunaga (Lisson Gallery). Art Basel reports that Christine Sun Kim’s digital animation installation will also be on view at Pacific Place’s Park Court until April 12.
A new sector, “Echoes,” spotlights artwork created within the last five years. Several galleries are also showcasing emerging artists in sections like “Discoveries” and “Insight.”
Auction Preview and Event Details
Seoul Auction is previewing works to be included in an upcoming Seoul auction at a preview event in Hong Kong from March 25th to 28th.
