Sublime Announces First Album in 30 Years, ‘Until the Sun Explodes’

Sublime is set to release their first full-length album in nearly three decades, Until the Sun Explodes, on June 12 via Atlantic Records.¹ The album marks the first project with Jakob Nowell – son of the band’s late frontman, Bradley Nowell – taking on lead vocal duties alongside founding members Eric Wilson on bass and Bud Gaugh on drums.^{1, 2}

Jakob Nowell has framed expectations for the new album, stating that the band’s 1996 self-titled record remains the definitive Sublime album. He describes Until the Sun Explodes as “an epilogue” and a tribute to his father’s legacy.¹ “The last Sublime record that will ever be made is Self-Titled,” Nowell said in a press statement. “There’s no replacing history, period. Until the Sun Explodes the album is an epilogue, and ‘Until the Sun Explodes’ the single is the epilogue to the epilogue.”²

The music video for the title track, “Until the Sun Explodes,” features locations in Long Beach, California, significant to the band’s history, and includes appearances from professional skateboarders Christian Hosoi and Omar Hassan.¹

Guest Appearances and Album Features

Until the Sun Explodes features contributions from a range of artists, including H.R. From Bad Brains, Fletcher Dragge of Pennywise, G Love, FIDLAR, and Australian surf-rockers Skegss.¹ The album includes the previously released single “Ensenada.”²

Drummer Bud Gaugh expressed that the single “expresses the gratitude we all perceive as well as our intent for the future of our band and the music we love.”¹

Sublime’s Upcoming Performances and Legacy

Sublime will celebrate the 30th anniversary of their 1996 self-titled album with a two-night stand at Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside Denver on April 17-18, performing the album in its entirety on the first night.^{1, 2}

The band is also embarking on a tour, launching May 9 in Fort Worth, Texas, with additional dates in Portland and Salt Lake City. A destination cruise, “Sublime Reed Madness,” is scheduled for November.¹

Bradley Nowell passed away in May 1996, just days before the band’s first European tour and two months before the release of the self-titled album, which went on to sell five million copies with hits like “What I Got,” “Wrong Way,” and “Santeria.”^{2, 3}
