Meta Restructures Reality Labs into AI-Focused ‘Pods’ to Boost Productivity
Meta is reorganizing its Reality Labs division, shifting to an “AI-native” structure with teams organized into small, focused “pods” of “AI builders,” according to a leaked memo reported by Business Insider. The move aims to significantly increase engineering productivity and product quality as the company doubles down on artificial intelligence.
Shift to AI-Native Teams
The overhaul impacts approximately 1,000 employees within Reality Labs, the division responsible for Meta’s virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) efforts, including the Metaverse platform and Quest headset. The restructuring introduces three new roles: AI Builder, AI Pod Lead and AI Org Lead. This change is intended to foster a flatter organizational structure, a concept championed by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
New Roles and Responsibilities
Each AI-focused pod will consist of a small group of AI builders concentrating on specific outcomes, potentially working across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Engineers, for example, may contribute to design work as needed. Pod Leads will manage the day-to-day operations of these pods, while Org Leads will oversee performance reviews and promotions, supported by AI systems. Meta has stated the overall team size will remain consistent despite the structural changes.
Zuckerberg’s Vision for AI Integration
This reorganization aligns with Mark Zuckerberg’s earlier statements regarding the transformative potential of AI. Zuckerberg indicated that 2026 will be a pivotal year, with AI dramatically changing workflows, potentially enabling a single, “extremely talented” person to accomplish tasks previously requiring large teams.
Reorganization Separate from Recent Layoffs
Despite recent layoffs at Meta, including cuts within Reality Labs, a Meta spokesperson clarified that the restructuring into AI-focused pods is unrelated to the workforce reductions. Hundreds of staff were laid off on Wednesday, affecting multiple teams across the company.
Growing Trend of ‘AI Builder’ Identity
The shift in structure is reflected in a growing trend among Meta employees who have begun identifying themselves as “AI builders” on LinkedIn, signaling the increasing importance of AI skills within the company. This rebranding highlights the company’s commitment to integrating AI into all aspects of its operations.
Meta Forms New AI Organization
This restructuring follows the formation of a new AI organization within Meta, led by Maher Saba, a vice president in Reality Labs, and Jyoti Mann. This new organization underscores Meta’s broader strategic focus on AI development and implementation.
