Singapore Enhances Shared Parental Leave, Offering Up to 30 Weeks of Government-Paid Time Off
Singaporean parents will soon have access to increased shared parental leave benefits, allowing for more time to bond with and care for their newborns. The Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) announced on March 26, 2026, that eligible working parents will receive 10 weeks of shared leave, an increase from the previous six weeks introduced in 2025. This enhancement, unveiled at the 2024 National Day Rally, applies to children born on or after April 1, 2026.
Expanded Leave Benefits for New Parents
The expanded shared parental leave scheme is designed to support families and encourage greater involvement from both parents in early childcare. The 10 weeks of shared leave is in addition to existing government-paid paternity and maternity leave schemes. Combined, eligible parents can now receive up to 30 weeks of government-paid parental leave within the child’s first year.
How the Shared Parental Leave Scheme Works
The shared paid leave will be automatically distributed equally between both parents, according to the MSF. However, parents can mutually agree to adjust the allocation based on their individual caregiving needs. Early communication with employers is encouraged to facilitate work arrangements and planning.
If parents cannot reach a mutual agreement on how to allocate the leave, they can take it in a continuous block within the first 26 weeks after the child’s birth, providing their employer with at least four weeks’ notice. The shared parental leave must be taken within 12 months of the child’s birth, following the completion of any government-paid maternity or paternity leave.
