Massachusetts ‘Match Ready’ for 2026 FIFA World Cup, Governor Healey Assures
Massachusetts is prepared to host seven matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Governor Maura Healey announced on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, detailing the state’s public safety and security measures. Gillette Stadium, to be rebranded as “Boston Stadium” for the tournament, will host games between June 13 and July 9.
$76 Million in Federal Funding for Security
Governor Healey highlighted the state’s success in securing approximately $76 million in federal funding dedicated to World Cup security, safety, emergency preparedness, and transportation planning. This funding addresses concerns previously raised by the Foxborough Select Board regarding security costs associated with hosting the matches. The board recently approved a license for the seven games on March 17, 2026, after assurances of financial support.
Comprehensive Statewide Planning Effort
The state’s preparation involves over 70 agencies across local, state, and federal levels, working collaboratively on all aspects of event management. These efforts encompass transportation, crowd management, cybersecurity, public health, and emergency response. “We’re also approaching safety as a statewide effort,” Healey stated. A new online portal, “Match Ready Massachusetts,” provides information related to public safety measures during the scheduled matches.
Fan Experiences and Economic Impact
In addition to the matches themselves, Massachusetts is planning fan festivals and community watch parties throughout the state. The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced $10 million in grants on March 23, 2026, to support these events in cities and towns including Boston, Worcester, New Bedford, and Lexington. Governor Healey emphasized the positive economic impact of the World Cup, stating it would benefit local businesses and showcase the state to visitors.
Massachusetts’ History of Hosting Major Sporting Events
Massachusetts has previously hosted World Cup matches, including six games for the Men’s World Cup in 1994, five games for the Women’s World Cup in 1999, and four games for the Women’s World Cup in 2003. Governor Healey noted that hosting seven matches this year is the most the state has ever hosted, equating the scale to “seven Super Bowls in four weeks.”
A friendly match between Brazil and France will serve as a preview of the World Cup atmosphere on Thursday, March 26, 2026. Special MBTA schedules for the summer matches will be announced in the coming weeks, following the implementation of “event trains” running between South Station and Foxborough Station for Thursday’s friendly.
