“Liesma” Celebrates 80 Years with Immersive Dance Spectacle “Waving”
The internationally acclaimed Latvian folk dance ensemble “Liesma” is marking its 80th anniversary with a special concert, “Waving,” at the VEF Culture Palace in Riga on April 26, 2026. The performance is similarly a tribute to the 90th birthday of Imants Magone, a pivotal figure in the ensemble’s history and a renowned choreographer.
A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity
Created two years prior to the anniversary celebration, “Waving” is a contemporary and retrospective dance show conceived and implemented by Artis Puriņš, then the artistic director of “Liesma.” According to Delfi, the production is described as a “hymn to the madness of youth,” seamlessly blending traditional Latvian folk dance with the energetic rhythms of pop and disco. The show features choreography by Imants Magone, Artis Puriņš, and Aleta Pēce.
Honoring Imants Magone’s Legacy
Imants Magone (1936-2008) played a crucial role in shaping “Liesma” into the celebrated ensemble it is today. As noted by VEF Kultūras pils, the anniversary concert is a fitting tribute to his 90th birthday. Magone was inspired by the cultural shifts of the 1970s and 80s in Latvia, particularly the vibrant atmosphere of the Poligrāfiķu discotheque, a popular venue known for its stylish parties.
A Stellar Cast and Creative Team
The production features the talents of the folk dance ensemble “Liesma,” under the artistic direction of Gunta Rudene, with Elvita Maskalāne and Egils Polis serving as repetitors. Dailes Theater actress Vita Vārpiņa and Liepāja Theater actor Hugo Puriņš also star in the performance, while National Theater actor Egils Melbārdis provides the voiceover for the “behind the scenes” narration. As highlighted on Facebook, the show is directed by Sabīne Ozoliņa.
