Showband singer Dave Lawlor: ‘My biggest regret is missing out on my kids’ lives when they were young’ Dave Lawlor, a veteran of the Irish showband scene and one of the stars of the Reeling in the Showband Years show, has spoken openly about the personal cost of his five-decade-long music career. Now 70, the Irish singing star celebrated 50 years in music while reflecting on the sacrifices made along the way. In a recent interview with the Irish Independent, Lawlor revealed that his biggest regret is missing out on a significant portion of his children’s lives during their formative years. He acknowledged that the demands of life on the road, frequent performances, and extended periods away from home took a toll on his family life. Lawlor also spoke about the impact of his career on his first marriage, admitting that the pressures of the music business contributed to its breakdown. He expressed deep regret over hurting his children and family during that time, describing it as a difficult period he eventually overcame. He credited his current wife, Anne, with helping him heal and rebuild after his first marriage ended. The couple first met when Anne attended one of his performances in Limerick, where she was a fan of his music. They have now been together for 20 years and married for 10, residing in Kilcormack, County Offaly. Lawlor emphasized that he has learned from past mistakes and is determined not to repeat them. He highlighted the importance of staying connected with his family, noting that Anne often travels with him, and when she cannot, they maintain regular contact through phone calls. His reflections come amid ongoing celebrations of his enduring career in Irish music, including performances with fellow entertainers in the Reeling in the Showband Years tour, which continues to honor the legacy of the showband era.
