Breaking News: Hamas to Release 10 Hostages in Two-Part Deal
In a significant development, Hamas has announced a plan to release a total of ten hostages, held captive since the start of the conflict in Gaza. The announcement came in a televised speech by Khalil al-Hayya, the Hamas leader in Gaza.
Partial Release Scheduled for Thursday
Four bodies of deceased hostages, including members of the Bibas family, will be handed over to Israeli authorities on Thursday. The Bibas family’s ordeal began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants captured parents Yarden and Shiri Bibas, along with their two young sons, Ariel (aged four) and Kfir (9 months old). Mr. Bibas was eventually released on February 1st.
Remaining Hostages to be Freed on Saturday
The remaining six hostages, who remain alive, will be released from Gaza on Saturday. This includes Hishamal-Sayed and Avera Mengisto, who were captured prior to the recent conflict. The deal to release these six hostages, instead of the initially-reported three, was confirmed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.
The Prime Minister’s office also confirmed that four more bodies of deceased hostages will be handed over to Israel next week.
A Step Towards Peace?
This development, while bringing some relief to families of the hostages, comes amid ongoing tensions between Israel and Hamas. Only time will tell if this gesture of goodwill will lead to a more lasting peace.
