Michael Murphy Punch Incident: Darragh Ó Sé Weighs In on Kerry’s Response

Former Kerry star Darragh Ó Sé has stated that Kerry should have dealt with Michael Murphy immediately after he punched Dylan Casey during the National Football League Division 1 final. Speaking on The Irish Times, Ó Sé said that if he were one of Casey’s teammates, he would not desire to hear any discussion about referee David Gough or the officiating, emphasizing that the focus should have been on addressing Murphy’s actions directly.

The incident occurred in the 16th minute of the League final at Croke Park, where Murphy struck Casey multiple times with his fist, including contact to the neck and head area. Referee David Gough issued Murphy a yellow card after consulting with sideline official Conor Lane. Despite television footage showing the strikes, no further sanction was imposed by the GAA’s Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC), meaning Murphy remains available for Donegal’s Ulster Championship opener against Down on April 26, 2026, as confirmed by RTÉ Sport.

Ó Sé’s comments come amid widespread criticism of the incident. Joe Brolly condemned Murphy’s actions, stating he has been “throwing punches for a long time and generally getting away with it,” although acknowledging Murphy’s status as one of the game’s greats. Former teammate Eamon McGee as well agreed the incident warranted a red card. The controversy has dominated post-match discussion following Donegal’s victory over Kerry in the League final.

Despite the backlash, the CCCC has decided not to pursue further action, allowing Murphy to play in Donegal’s upcoming Ulster Championship campaign as they aim for a three-in-a-row title. The GAA has not issued any additional statement on the matter since the initial ruling.
