Jake Reiner Speaks Out on Parents’ Tragic Deaths
Jake Reiner, the eldest son of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner, has shared his profound grief in a modern statement, describing the loss of his parents as “my living nightmare.” In a heartfelt essay posted on Substack, Jake detailed how he learned of their deaths and the ongoing emotional toll.

According to Jake, he was at Union Station in Los Angeles attending a celebration of life for a friend when he received the devastating news from his sister Romy. First, she informed him that their father, Rob Reiner, had died. Minutes later, she called back to say their mother, Michele Reiner, had also died.
Jake expressed that nothing compares to losing both parents at the same time, especially under such violent circumstances. He stated, “I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that, no, it’s not a dream. This truly is my living nightmare.”
The tragic event occurred on December 14, 2025, when Rob and Michele Reiner were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home. Their youngest son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with their murders and has pleaded not guilty. He is due back in court next week.
Jake remembered his parents as his “guiding lights, the foundation of who I am as a human being, and the most giving people I have ever known.” He emphasized the love they shared for their children and for each other, which he always looked up to as the standard of a successful relationship.
While acknowledging that people have questions about what happened, Jake noted that some answers will arrive in time, but certain aspects of this tragedy belong only to the family and must remain private to protect what little remains of their bond.
Rob Reiner, 78, was an acclaimed director known for films including This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and Stand By Me. Michele Reiner, 70, was an actress, photographer, producer, and founder of Reiner Light, a photography agency and production company.
The family’s loss has been described as devastating, with Jake emphasizing that his parents did not deserve the violence inflicted upon them. He said they deserved to be loved, respected, and appreciated for their contributions to their family and the world.
