Turning iMessages into a Digital Love Story
Rather than relying on traditional wedding slideshows, Lau used Claude Code to process a massive dataset of the couple’s communications. The project involved analyzing 161,015 messages exchanged over 4,340 days. By feeding this history into the AI, Lau was able to extract specific milestones and patterns that defined their relationship over more than a decade.
The resulting data was transformed into interactive dashboards and a dedicated wedding website. This allowed guests to visualize the couple’s journey not through curated anecdotes, but through the actual volume and frequency of their interactions.
The Metrics of a Relationship
The analysis revealed a detailed quantitative breakdown of the couple’s 12-year history. According to the project data, the couple exchanged:
- 1,795 “I love you” messages.
- 28,757 emojis.
- 8,602 shared photos.
The data also highlighted the dynamics of their communication. Lau contributed 43% of the total messages, while his wife sent 57%. Beyond the raw numbers, the AI identified behavioral trends, such as a peak in communication during their long-distance college years and a subsequent dip in message volume after the couple moved in together.
The Intersection of AI and Personal Memory
This project represents a shift in how we perceive “Big Data.” While data mining is often viewed through the lens of surveillance or targeted advertising, Lau’s project uses the same mechanics for personal reflection and celebration. By treating a relationship as a dataset, he was able to uncover patterns—like the ebb and flow of communication during different life stages—that might be forgotten or overlooked in a standard retelling of a couple’s history.
