Sydney Woman Charged After Alleged Antisemitic Slurs at Youth Netball Game

A 42-year-old woman has been charged by New South Wales Police after allegedly directing antisemitic comments toward individuals during a children’s netball match in Sydney’s east. The incident, which took place during a junior game, has sparked widespread condemnation from sports governing bodies and community leaders.

The Incident at Heffron Park

The confrontation occurred just after 10 a.m. On Saturday at the Heffron Park netball courts in Maroubra. The match was being played between the Saints Netball Club and the Maccabi Netball Club, a club serving the Jewish community.

Police were called to the scene following reports that a woman was making offensive comments toward a group of people. Upon arrival, officers issued a move-on direction to the woman to remove her from the immediate area.

Legal Charges and Potential Penalties

Following the Saturday incident, the woman was officially charged on Sunday for using offensive language in a public place. She is expected to appear before the Waverley Local Court on June 17.

Under current regulations, this specific charge carries a maximum penalty of a community corrections order or a fine of up to $660.

Community and Club Responses

The sporting community has moved quickly to distance itself from the behavior. Netball NSW confirmed that the individual has been suspended from participating in or attending any netball activities while an investigation into the matter continues.

“Everyone in our netball community deserves to feel safe, welcome and respected,” Netball NSW stated. “Antisemitism and discrimination of any kind have absolutely no place in our game and will not be tolerated.”

The organization also praised the Randwick Netball Association and the Saints Netball Club for their immediate response, which included contacting law enforcement and engaging with those affected by the slurs.

Saints Netball Club identified the woman as a “supporter associated with our club” and issued a statement unequivocally disavowing antisemitism in all forms. The club emphasized that such remarks do not reflect the standards, principles, or values of its members, players, or the wider community.

The Human Toll on Young Athletes

The emotional impact on the children involved has been significant. Adam Dinte, president of the Maccabi Netball Club, reported that the young girls on the team were deeply distressed by the encounter.

Dinte shared a poignant example of the incident’s aftermath, noting that one player told her mother after the game that she wanted to remove her uniform because she no longer felt safe and did not want to be identified as Jewish.
