Billion-Dollar Bids for European Expansion

The NBA is aggressively courting a continental footprint, actively reviewing investment proposals to launch a professional basketball league in Europe by October 2027. According to ESPN, the league has already fielded over 20 formal bids from sports clubs and investment groups. The appetite is substantial: several offers have already breached the billion-dollar threshold for a single franchise stake.

Targeting Twelve Major Markets

The selection process, which kicked off in February, narrowed the scope to 12 metropolitan hubs. The list of potential host cities spans the continent: London, Paris, Madrid, Berlin, Munich, Milan, Rome, Istanbul, Barcelona, Manchester, Lyon, and Athens.

Targeting Twelve Major Markets

Mark Tatum, the n°2 of the NBA, confirmed the league is now vetting final bids for permanent franchises. “We are extremely encouraged by the final offers received for the permanent franchises of this new league supported by the NBA and the FIBA,” Tatum stated. He added that the endeavor marks the largest influx of capital in the history of European basketball.

Capitalizing on a New Economic Model

Financial expectations have shifted rapidly. While early internal NBA estimates placed franchise valuations between $500 million and $1 billion, Sports Business Journal reports that the market has already eclipsed that ceiling. The goal is for individual franchises to reach profitability by their third season.

Over the first decade, the NBA projects the ecosystem—spanning media rights, franchise sales, sponsorship, ticketing, and merchandising—will generate more than 10 billion dollars in capital.

A Hybrid Competition Structure

The proposed league will operate with 16 teams. This structure relies on a split format:

  • 12 Permanent Franchises: Backed by the current pool of investment groups.
  • 4 Open Spots: Reserved for clubs qualifying via merit-based competition, such as the FIBA Basketball Champions League or national championship tournaments.

The competition will mirror the NBA’s domestic blueprint, featuring a full home-and-away regular season and a playoff bracket leading to a set of “NBA Europe Finals.”

Navigating EuroLeague Contractual Hurdles

Integrating established European powerhouses is the final, complex piece of the puzzle. While clubs like Real Madrid, ASVEL, and Fenerbahçe have been linked to the project, they remain tied to long-term agreements with the EuroLeague. Despite decade-long commitments, reports suggest that specific exit clauses may offer a path for these teams to join the new venture. The NBA and FIBA are currently weighing the viability of these bids as the clock ticks toward the 2027 launch.
