WWE Moves to Secure Retail Rights for Roman Reigns Persona
WWE has filed a new trademark application for the term “Tribal Chief,” according to records from the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Submitted on Friday, July 3, 2026, the filing targets a broad range of merchandise, including shirts, jackets, footwear, and championship trophy belts.

Targeting the Apparel Market
The latest application specifically targets the “IC 025” classification. By securing these rights, WWE ensures it maintains exclusive control over the commercialization of the “Tribal Chief” moniker on consumer goods. This expands the company’s existing intellectual property portfolio, which already includes a 2022 filing for the same term under the “IC 041” classification, covering entertainment services and live wrestling performances.
Correcting Past Procedural Lapses
WWE’s efforts to solidify its hold on the name have hit speed bumps. While the company holds a valid, active trademark for performance-based services filed on March 24, 2022, other attempts to register the term for merchandise have faced procedural hurdles.
A previous application filed on October 11, 2024, for clothing-related purposes was marked as abandoned by the USPTO. Official records indicate this status was reached because the company failed to file a Statement of Use or an Extension Request by the required deadline following the issuance of a Notice of Allowance.
Protecting a Dominant Character Brand
Trademarking specific character nicknames is a standard business practice for WWE. It allows the promotion to manage its brand identity across multiple revenue streams, from television broadcasts to international merchandise sales. The company segments these filings to ensure intellectual property remains enforceable across different industries:
- Entertainment Services (IC 041): Protects the use of the name in wrestling exhibitions, internet content, and fan club services.
- Merchandise (IC 025): Protects the commercial sale of apparel, accessories, and replica championship belts.
This legal framework allows the company to prevent unauthorized third-party sellers from profiting off the specific character branding.
