BANGKOK — The death toll from a massive fire at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao music bar has risen to 30 people, according to a statement from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration released Tuesday, July 14, 2026. More than 70 people were injured in the blaze, and 24 remain in critical condition as investigators examine the venue’s safety compliance.

Fatalities Linked to Windowless Bathrooms and Toxic Smoke

The fire broke out late Sunday in a northern district of the Thai capital. Police reported that most victims were discovered trapped in windowless bathrooms, where patrons likely sought refuge from the flames. Firefighters took approximately 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

Amorn Pimanmas, president of the Thailand Structural Engineers Association, told reporters that the building’s design likely exacerbated the tragedy. Pimanmas identified several risk factors, including low ceilings and the potential use of non-flame-retardant foam for decorations. He noted that limited ventilation caused smoke to accumulate rapidly, creating toxic air that likely served as the primary cause of death for many victims.

Zoning Loopholes and Safety Regulation Failures

The Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar claimed a capacity of up to 600 customers, though officials have not confirmed the exact number of people inside during the Sunday night fire. A critical point of the investigation centers on how the business was licensed.

According to Amorn Pimanmas, the venue was licensed as a restaurant with live music rather than a formal entertainment venue. This distinction exists because the bar was located outside designated zoning for entertainment businesses. Pimanmas stated that this classification allowed the establishment to bypass the stricter fire safety requirements mandated for entertainment venues, calling for a “revolution” in how fire safety laws are enforced by the government.

Bangkok Government Response and Site Conditions

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt announced Tuesday that he has ordered a sweeping survey of similar establishments to assess public risk. Sittipunt stated the city will increase enforcement of existing laws to improve safety standards across the capital.

On Tuesday, mourners and former patrons gathered at the site, leaving white flowers and handwritten messages in Thai and Korean. Thai officials had moved debris—including blackened chairs and melted musical instruments—to the sidewalk on Monday to facilitate the ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire.
