High-Speed Tragedy Claims Two Lives

Two people are dead and three others are injured following a high-speed collision in Eldorado, Misiones, on Saturday. The crash occurred amid local celebrations of the Argentina national football team’s victory. Among the victims was 16-year-old tennis prospect Luisana Schönberger, a loss that has triggered a formal investigation into whether the incident was the result of an illegal street race.

A Collision on Avenida San Martín

The wreckage came to rest on Avenida San Martín, near the kilometer 10 marker. Fernando Caro, the municipal Director of Traffic and Transportation, said witness accounts and video footage point to multiple vehicles moving at excessive speeds.

Official reports state a Volkswagen Gol carrying four young people struck the rear of a Toyota Corolla. The impact sent the Gol careening out of control, across the opposite lane, and into a tree. Investigators are now scrutinizing the scene to determine if the drivers were engaged in a “picada,” or illegal street race.

The Toll on Local Youth

Luisana Schönberger, a student at the Instituto Superior San José, sustained fatal injuries, including fractures to her humerus and lumbar spine, according to Misiones Online and El Territorio. The driver, 20-year-old Renzo Retamozo, also died.

Three survivors, aged 16, 17, and 20, continue to face the aftermath of the crash:

  • The 17-year-old is in intensive care, supported by mechanical ventilation.
  • The 20-year-old was discharged on Monday but requires ongoing medical monitoring.
  • The status of the remaining passenger is currently being documented by authorities as part of the broader investigation.

Remembering a Rising Tennis Talent

The Asociación Argentina de Tenis (AAT) honored Schönberger’s career, citing her dedication and talent. Her record included reaching the 4th position in the national sub-10 rankings and the 3rd regional position in the sub-14 category.

Schönberger trained at the Eldorado Lawn Tennis club, where staff remembered her as an “adoptive daughter” of the institution. The community at Instituto Superior San José has issued formal condolences, pledging support to the families affected by the tragedy.

Authorities Scrutinize Surveillance Footage

Municipal officials are analyzing security camera footage to reconstruct the final moments before the crash. Director Fernando Caro confirmed that a third vehicle, a Ford Escort, was captured on video swerving to avoid the Toyota Corolla just before the collision. Police are gathering further testimony to determine the legal liabilities of those involved in the high-speed maneuvers on the public thoroughfare.
