Game creator Hideo Kojima shared on social media that he recently purchased the new Blu-ray release of the 1958 British historical film A Night to Remember, a movie he first watched in his childhood that left a lasting impression on him.
The acclaimed director, known for titles like Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid, posted to his personal X account on October 24, 2024, noting that the high-definition home video release prompted his purchase. According to Kojima’s post, the film about the RMS Titanic’s final hours delivered a profound impact when he saw it as a young boy.
Historical Film Preservation on Blu-ray
A Night to Remember, directed by Roy Ward Baker and based on Walter Lord’s 1955 non-fiction book of the same name, remains widely regarded by film historians as one of the most accurate cinematic depictions of the 1912 Titanic disaster. The Criterion Collection released the film on Blu-ray, utilizing a 4K digital restoration from the 35mm original camera negative. The restoration work, completed by the Criterion Collection in collaboration with The Rank Organisation and ITV Studios, brought renewed attention to the classic black-and-white production.
Hideo Kojima’s Cinematic Influences
Kojima frequently uses his social media presence to document his consumption of international cinema, literature, and music, often highlighting how classic storytelling shapes his creative output in the video game industry. While the director did not draw a direct line between the 1958 maritime drama and his current game development projects, his public appreciation for mid-century cinema reflects the diverse artistic influences behind his studio, Kojima Productions. The studio is currently developing Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and an espionage action game titled Physint.
