The Origins of the usbliter8 Exploit Controversy

According to Paradigm Shift Technology’s technical blog post published on June 18, 2026, the usbliter8 vulnerability targets Apple’s A12, S4, S5, and A13 system-on-chips introduced in 2018 and 2019. The exploit relies on crafted data that confuses the device’s USB controller, giving an attacker physical access and control over the startup process before iOS loads. Because the vulnerability resides in the immutable BootROM, Apple cannot patch it through a software update, though its practical impact remains limited to older hardware models.

Paradigm Shift stated at the time of publication that the disclosure was coordinated with Apple Product Security. However, Magnet Forensics contends that the technical substance of the exploit came directly from internal research files rather than independent discovery.

Allegations Against Former Engineer Mario Del Gaudio

According to court filings from Magnet Forensics, defendant Mario Del Gaudio worked as an exploit engineer placed with the firm from November 2023 through November 2024.

Following the conclusion of his placement at Magnet Forensics, Del Gaudio joined Paradigm Shift Technology. Magnet Forensics asserts in the lawsuit that it possesses proof directly linking Del Gaudio to the creation and publication of usbliter8. The company states that Paradigm Shift ignored multiple cease-and-desist demands to pull the technical publication and associated proof-of-concept code.

Legal Demands and Next Steps

Magnet Forensics is asking the court for financial compensation alongside a permanent injunction preventing Paradigm Shift Technology from any further use or disclosure of the disputed trade secrets. The company also demands the complete removal of the usbliter8 publication and related technical materials from public channels.
