According to researchers, the functional model relies on three key subsystems: excitation, transmission, and closing structures. At the center of the apparatus sits a pendulum-style "capital pillar" anchored to the floor to amplify seismic vibrations. When a base displacement of just 0.5 mm to 1 mm occurs, the tip of the pendulum moves to activate an L-shaped lever system that releases a bronze ball into the corresponding toad's mouth, while a locking mechanism prevents adjacent dragons from reacting.
Historical Accuracy and Debate
Simulations conducted by the research team indicate the system responds reliably to minimal ground displacement without generating false alarms. While modern seismology suggests a single instrument cannot pinpoint an exact epicenter on its own, Xu notes that historical accounts align with optimal geological alignments. For example, historical texts describe the device detecting the Longxi earthquake in 138 AD from a distance of 850 kilometers, well before shockwaves were felt in the imperial capital of Luoyang. Furthermore, records show a notable shift in documented local earthquakes following the deployment of the artifact, rising from three sismos in the preceding 85 years to 23 in the 58 years afterward in a region otherwise considered to have low seismicity.
The Legacy of Zhang Heng
Zhang Heng served as the grand imperial astrologer starting in 115 AD, a position comparable to the director of a modern national observatory, where he also developed an armilar sphere capable of mapping the night sky. However, his inventions operated within a political framework where natural disasters were interpreted as omens challenging the mandate of the emperor. Some modern scholars suggest that Heng’s sudden retirement in 138 AD and subsequent death a year later stemmed from political discomfort surrounding a device capable of anticipating earthquakes. The original instrument and its technical diagrams were eventually lost to warfare, political chaos, or suppression by elite families.
