On Thursday, August 6, 2026, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Talaud Islands in Indonesia, according to data from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) and reporting by Xinhua. Hours later on the same day at 04:33 am local time (GMT +9), a moderate 4.7-magnitude earthquake registered in the Maluku Sea, centered approximately 73 kilometers west of Pulau Tapat Island in North Maluku, as tracked by Volcano Discovery.

Tobelo and Southern Sumatra Events

Activity continued northward and westward over the following days. On Thursday, August 6, 2026, at 01:50 am Jayapura time, a strong magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck 62 kilometers west of Tobelo, Indonesia, according to Volcano Discovery. Days later, on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at 03:15 pm Universal Time, a stronger magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit Southern Sumatra, Indonesia, as recorded by Volcano Discovery.
