Western Europe experienced its hottest June-to-July period on record this year, surpassing the previous high set in 2022, according to data released by the European climate agency Copernicus. The persistent heatwaves have fueled widespread wildfires, triggered severe droughts, and caused thousands of projected heat-related deaths across the region.
Copernicus Data Confirms Record-Breaking Western European Temperatures
According to the European climate agency Copernicus, the average temperature across Western Europe for the June-July period reached 21.62°C (70.92°F). This figure eclipses the previous regional record established during the summer of 2022. The extreme weather conditions began as early as May, bringing intense heat that triggered national temperature records, major wildfires, and prolonged dry spells in multiple countries.
“Persistent high-pressure systems trapped heat over western Europe; the extreme temperatures also amplified widespread drought,” said Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, as reported by outlets including ABC News and The Independent. “As soils dry out, they lose their ability to provide natural cooling, allowing heat to build more readily.” Burgess added that the situation demonstrates how climate change intensifies heat extremes, with high temperatures and drought reinforcing one another.
Global Sea Surface Temperatures and the El Niño Factor
Beyond Western Europe, global climate statistics show that July ocean temperatures reached historic highs. Copernicus reported that extra-polar oceans—those free of seasonal sea ice—saw the highest average sea surface temperature ever recorded for the month. This marine heat was fueled in part by developing El Niño conditions in the equatorial Pacific, a periodic warming cycle that influences global weather variations.

The new average global record for July sea surface temperatures reached 20.96°C (69.73°F), surpassing the previous mark of 20.89°C (69.60°F) set in 2023, according to Copernicus data. Meanwhile, the global average surface air temperature for last month stood at 16.90°C (62.42°F), making it the joint second warmest July on record, tied with July 2024.
Climate Outlook and Potential Records
Climate statistics compiled by international agencies indicate that 2026 stands as the third-hottest globally, trailing behind 2024 and 2025. However, scientists note that changing conditions leave room for a shift by year’s end.
Researchers warn that the combination of accelerated human-caused global warming and a developing supersized El Niño increases the probability that 2026 could ultimately rival or exceed 2024 as the hottest on record globally. As environmental agencies continue to monitor atmospheric and oceanic data, communities across Western Europe remain vulnerable to ongoing water scarcity and elevated wildfire risks tied to the lingering dry soils and high-pressure weather systems.
