The single injection of vitamin K, administered within six hours of birth, has been standard medical practice in the United States since 1961 to help blood clot properly. However, recent analyses show that vaccine and medicine hesitancy has increasingly swept up non-vaccine interventions like vitamin K, leaving a rising number of newborns vulnerable to severe bleeding disorders.

Rising Refusal Rates Documented Across US Hospitals

Data tracked across more than 40 hospitals in all 50 states reveal a clear upward trajectory in vitamin K refusals. According to the JAMA study, which reviewed electronic medical records from approximately 5 million births between 2017 and 2024, the proportion of infants declining the shot rose from 2.92% in 2017 to 5.18% in 2024. Researchers examining death certificate data from federal and state agencies estimated that a meaningful portion of the 700 infant deaths attributed to spontaneous bleeding in the brain during 2024 likely stemmed from vitamin K deficiency.

Medical Risks of Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding

All infants are born with low levels of vitamin K, a nutrient essential for the formation of clotting factors that naturally stop bleeding. Because normal newborn nutrition, including breast milk, does not supply adequate amounts of the vitamin during the early months of life, newborns face a distinct window of vulnerability.

Without the prophylactic injection, infants are 81 times more likely to develop vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The condition can trigger severe internal bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract and the brain, carrying a mortality rate of roughly 1 in 5. Parents who refuse the shot typically cite concerns over injection pain, perceived side effects, or a general belief that the intervention is unnecessary, according to findings cited in the JAMA study.

Vitamin K is one of three interventions recommended for newborns by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the CDC, alongside an antibiotic eye ointment and the hepatitis B vaccine. Public health reporting notes that the vitamin K shot has become entangled in a broader post-pandemic tide of skepticism affecting routine childhood immunizations, such as shots for measles and whooping cough.
