California Man Indicted for Drug Trafficking in Utah

A Los Angeles man faces federal drug trafficking charges in Utah after federal agents and local police intercepted a kilogram of heroin shipped from Mexico, according to a Department of Justice news release issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah.

Federal Indictment and Arrest Details

Christian Salinas-Santiago, 30, was indicted on a charge of distribution of heroin following an operation conducted by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Salt Lake City Police Department, with assistance from the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake, according to court documents cited by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Salinas-Santiago was initially charged by criminal complaint on April 23, 2026, according to the Department of Justice.

The investigation began in January 2026 when HSI and the Salt Lake City Police Department opened a joint inquiry into a Mexico-based narcotics source of supply, according to federal records. During the operation, an HSI undercover agent communicated with a Mexico-based drug trafficker to arrange shipments to Utah.

Undercover Operation in Midvale

On April 21, 2026, the Mexico-based source instructed the undercover agent to pick up a kilogram of heroin in Midvale, Utah, informing the agent that the delivery driver would arrive in a black Nissan Altima, according to court documents. Federal officials stated that Salinas-Santiago drove the Nissan Altima to the designated location and handed the heroin to the undercover agent.

Law enforcement officers stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation shortly after the exchange, arresting Salinas-Santiago at the scene. Laboratory testing confirmed that the substance distributed by Salinas-Santiago was heroin, weighing approximately 1.03 kilograms, or 2.27 pounds, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Court Appearance and Prosecution

Salinas-Santiago’s initial appearance on the federal indictment is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on May 7, 2026, before a U.S. Hatch United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City, according to court schedules.
