Convicted Fraudster Hendrik Holt Flees Prison During Day Release

Convicted fraudster Hendrik Holt fled a Berlin prison facility during an approved unmonitored day release, triggering an international manhunt led by the Osnabrück Public Prosecutor’s Office. Holt, 36, failed to return to the correctional facility in southern Berlin on Tuesday, August 25, prompting authorities to issue a European arrest warrant.

According to the Osnabrück Public Prosecutor’s Office, investigators formally established that Holt absconded after he contacted the prison via email the day after his disappearance, stating simply that he would not be returning. Investigators confirmed that the circumstances met all legal criteria for an active prison escape.

Moscow Social Media Posts Add Mystery to Manhunt

Shortly after his escape, updates appeared on a verified Instagram profile belonging to Holt, featuring images and video footage purportedly originating from Russia. One posted story featured the caption, “Greetings from Moscow, very nice here, the caviar is fantastic,” according to public reports.

German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (F.A.Z.) cross-referenced the background buildings shown in the video footage with digital mapping services, successfully locating a structure within the Basmannyj district of Moscow. Authorities have not officially confirmed whether Holt traveled to Russia or if third parties uploaded the media on his behalf, citing the ongoing confidentiality of the active manhunt.

Authorities Rule Out Rostock Airport Departure

Karsten Lauth, a representative for airport operator Crisp Partners, told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung that Rostock Airport handled no such departure.

According to Lauth, all departing flights and passengers undergo strict, uninterrupted checks by border and security authorities, ruling out an escape through that specific regional airport location. Federal and regional police forces continue to coordinate tracking efforts across European jurisdictions pursuant to the active warrant.

Background on Holt’s Criminal Convictions

Holt’s imprisonment stems from extensive white-collar criminal convictions related to large-scale investment fraud. German courts previously sentenced the convicted millionaire fraudster over elaborate schemes involving fake wind park projects that defrauded investors of millions of euros.
