An American tourist visiting Warsaw was allegedly attacked, choked, and pinned to the ground by passersby in the city center after being targeted for not speaking Polish, according to local news reports and statements from the victim’s wife.
An Initial Confrontation Over Language in the Capital
The incident began while the tourist and a friend were walking through the Polish capital. The couple, who have lived in the United States for years, were visiting friends in Poland for a few days when the confrontation occurred, according to the victim’s wife.
The entire episode was captured on video and widely circulated on social media. Accounts provided by the victim’s spouse detail how an unknown woman approached the American tourist in a hostile manner, demanding to know why he was not speaking Polish. When the tourist asked to be left alone and attempted to walk away, the woman followed him, grabbed his clothing, pushed him, and insisted he speak the local language.
Escalation and Physical Violence on the Street
As the tourist tried to distance himself from the initial aggressor, the woman drew the attention of other pedestrians. A passing man intervened by grabbing the foreigner’s belongings and bag to prevent him from leaving the scene.
The victim attempted to flee, but the male aggressor pursued him, forced him against a parked car, shoved him to the ground, and began choking him. The attacker reportedly loosened his grip only after the victim began suffocating and shouted that he could not breathe.
The Wife’s Public Condemnation
“What shocks me the most is how an ordinary complaint about a tourist not knowing the language escalated into complete strangers blocking him, chasing him, knocking him to the ground, and choking him,” the victim’s wife stated publicly. “We came to Poland for just a few days. Why should a person on the street have to justify what language they are speaking?”
Police Intervention and Silence from Authorities
While the participants waited for law enforcement to arrive, a second bystander joined the confrontation. Unaware of the prior context, the individual also publicly criticized the foreign national for being in Poland without knowing the language.
Officers from the Polish police arrived at the scene and listened to accounts from all parties involved. According to the victim’s wife, the female aggressor continued to express outrage over the tourist’s lack of Polish language skills in the presence of the officers and openly described herself as xenophobic.
Following the interviews, police officers questioned the individuals involved and released everyone from the scene. As of reporting, law enforcement authorities have not issued an official public statement regarding the incident.
