The historic Forest Theater in South Dallas will officially reopen its doors on Sunday, November 1, following a closure of more than 50 years, according to Forest Forward. The venue will host a grand community celebration known as the Grand Return to mark its revival as a cultural landmark and performing arts hub.

The homecoming event begins at 5:30 PM on November 1, featuring live entertainment, musical performances, food trucks, and local vendors in a designated Vendor Village. Elizabeth Wattley, CEO of Forest Forward, described the reopening as a significant milestone for the neighborhood. “The Grand Return is not merely a celebration; it’s a homecoming,” Wattley stated. “After over five decades, we will ignite the tower and create an inviting space for all.” Community members must register in advance to attend the event.
History and Cultural Legacy of the Forest Theater
Originally opened in 1949, the Forest Theater established itself as a prominent music venue in South Dallas, hosting legendary performers such as Prince, B.B. King, and Erykah Badu. For generations, the site served as a gathering space for the community before closing its doors decades ago. The revitalization project aims to honor this musical heritage while transforming the property into a modern facility designed to spur economic growth and educational enrichment in the area.
Revitalization Plan and Facility Expansion
The restoration of the theater forms part of a broader community development initiative led by Forest Forward that combines arts, culture, and economic improvement. The expanded campus will feature:

- A 200-seat black box theater
- A 13,000-square-foot creative education lab

To support ongoing operations and secure the venue’s long-term future, Forest Forward launched the Light the Tower campaign, a fundraising drive aiming to raise $2.5 million. Attendees and supporters can contribute to the campaign through individual donations and limited-edition recognition opportunities, which include participating in the symbolic lighting of the theater’s iconic tower during the reopening celebrations.
