The San Francisco 49ers arrived in Melbourne, Australia, to begin their weeklong preparation for a regular-season matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, undertaking a complex logistical operation designed to combat the physical toll of international travel. According to San Francisco general manager John Lynch, the franchise structured its journey using extensive research from sports science professionals, sleep experts, and athletes with prior global competition experience.
The Logistics of Long-Distance NFL Travel
“We focused on doing a study from every angle, from talking to sports science people, from talking to sleep experts.”
To test the effects of the transition, the organization sent an advance group of staff members to Australia prior to the team’s arrival. That advance team reported back that time-zone adjustment symptoms lingered for approximately three days.
Player input also guided the itinerary. Team decision-makers presented their accumulated data directly to the roster. “And overwhelmingly, our players felt like wanting to get down there early,” Lynch stated.
Preseason Scheduling and Roster Management
Planning for the international trip required adjustments to the team’s exhibition schedule. San Francisco coordinated with the Las Vegas Raiders to move their preseason finale to a Thursday night. According to Lynch, that arrangement provided the 49ers with crucial extra days to evaluate injuries, manage mandatory roster cuts, and finalize preparations before boarding the flight.

Building the practice squad presented unique administrative hurdles. Front-office personnel had to verify that every incoming player held a valid passport before signing contracts. “The first time I’ve ever had to say to an agent, or our people had to say to an agent or a player, ‘Do you have a passport?'” Lynch noted.
Learning from Past International Precedents
Lynch drew on his own historic experience with the National Football League’s international games, specifically a preseason trip to Japan during his playing career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That journey left a lasting impression regarding post-travel fatigue. “I really felt like we were off for multiple weeks after it,” Lynch said.
