Malone Lam, a cryptocurrency fraud defendant, faces up to 20 years in federal prison after pleading guilty in Washington to racketeering conspiracy charges connected to one of the largest digital asset thefts in United States history, according to the U.S. Prosecutors state that Lam led an international cybercrime network that stole hundreds of millions of dollars from victims using social engineering tactics before laundering the funds through a lavish month-long spending spree in Miami and Los Angeles.
Guilty Plea in Federal Court
Lam entered his guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly in Washington, according to federal court records. A sentencing date has not yet been set. Lam is the eleventh defendant to plead guilty among 18 individuals indicted in the sweeping federal cryptocurrency fraud case, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Social Engineering and the Washington Bitcoin Heist
In August 2024, Lam and his co-conspirators targeted a victim in Washington through psychological manipulation, executing a theft of more than 245 million de dólares in Bitcoin, according to federal prosecutors. Two of Lam’s accomplices posed as employees of Google and the cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, tricking the victim into granting access to a Google Drive account and revealing security codes. The breach allowed Lam to withdraw more than 4,100 bitcoins. Federal authorities arrested Lam in Miami following an investigation that tracked his rapid liquidation of the stolen digital assets into cash.
Supercars, Nightclubs, and International Asset Laundering
Following the August 2024 theft, Lam converted the stolen cryptocurrency into cash to fund a high-end lifestyle, renting luxury mansions and purchasing a fleet of more than 30 custom vehicles, including Porsche, Lamborghini, and Ferrari models, according to the FBI. Court documents from a district court in Florida noted that Lam became a notorious fixture in the nightlife scenes of Los Angeles and Miami, spending 569.000 dólares at a Los Angeles nightclub in a single evening. The purchases included a watch valued at 2 millones de dólares.
