The United Kingdom announced an import ban on all goods originating from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, alongside strict limitations on commercial services. According to Miliband’s statement in the House of Commons, British companies are now barred from providing financing, construction, infrastructure, real estate, and advertising services for settlement projects. Miliband stated that the UK will enforce targeted sanctions against specific companies and individuals facilitating illegal settlement expansion, warning that violators will face the full force of British law.
The economic impact of the trade restriction is expected to be limited because settlements produce a relatively small volume of agricultural exports. However, according to government statements, the policy represents a profound symbolic shift by a longtime ally. Miliband expressed what he described as a deep sense of shame regarding conditions in Palestine, explicitly accusing settler groups of carrying out ethnic cleansing under the gaze of the international community. Miliband also tightened Britain’s arms embargo, expanding restrictions to include military equipment that materially contributes to the occupation of Palestinian territories.
