Russia Expands Moscow Anti-Drone Defense Network With Pantsir Towers

Russia has expanded Moscow’s air defense network by constructing specialized 35-meter-high towers designed to host Pantsir-family short-range air defense systems, according to military reports and open-source analysis published in August 2026. The elevated platforms raise the defense systems above surrounding terrain and buildings to improve radar horizons and better track low-flying unmanned aerial vehicles.

Tower Construction and Strategic Deployment Around Moscow

Construction of the elevated defense positions began in 2023 to form several defensive rings around the Russian capital, according to reports from military analysts. Analyst Mark Krutov documented that at least seven new towers were constructed between May 19 and May 21, situated primarily to the north and east of Moscow near populated settlements. By mid-2026, assessments placed the number of known short-range air defense positions in and around Moscow at more than 100, including roughly two dozen new towers observed earlier that year.

This extended range provides operators with more distance to detect and track incoming aerial threats.

In addition to standard armaments, the tower-based systems are equipped with the smaller TKB-1055 “Gvozd” interceptor missile designed specifically for counter-drone operations. The Gvozd is considerably smaller than standard Pantsir missiles; a single container can house four Gvozd interceptors in the space normally occupied by one standard missile. This configuration allows a Pantsir launcher to carry up to 48 compact interceptors.

State corporation Rostec confirmed that the miniature missiles completed state testing and entered serial production, with deliveries actively underway to Russian forces. The TKB-1055 features a reported engagement range of 500 meters to 7 kilometers, an altitude engagement capability from 15 meters to 5 kilometers, and utilizes radio-command guidance.

Broader Air Defense Context and Ukrainian Drone Campaign

The elevated tower network operates as part of a layered air defense architecture protecting Moscow that also incorporates S-300 and S-400 long-range missile systems. These adjustments follow a series of long-range drone strikes hitting the Moscow region from hundreds of kilometers away.
