Pru Lindsey Secures Princeton’s First-Half Lead

Princeton controlled the pace early, though the first quarter remained scoreless thanks to strong defensive play from Penn State. Nittany Lions goaltender Aby Deverka recorded an early save and her defense blocked a rapid-fire sequence of shots from Molly Nye and Tabby Vaughan.

The offensive breakthrough arrived in the second quarter. Pru Lindsey scored the game’s opening goal by beating Deverka, then followed up minutes later with a successful penalty stroke set up by Ella Cashman’s shot off a penalty corner. Lindsey’s back-to-back strikes built a 2-0 lead for Princeton before halftime.

Penn State Responds in the Second Half

Penn State mounted a comeback effort after the break. Ella Gaitan capitalized on an early third-quarter penalty corner by deflecting a shot from Cam Standish past the Princeton defense. That goal cut the deficit to 2-1 and sparked a flurry of penalty corners for the Nittany Lions.

However, Princeton’s defensive unit—featuring Clem Houlden, Ottilie Sykes, and Gabriella Anderson, who added a defensive save—shut down the remaining threats. Penn State managed only six total shots during the match, with Caitlin Thompson knocking away two late penalty corners in the final minute to preserve the victory.

Upcoming Matchups for Both Teams

With the win, Princeton caps a successful weekend sweep that also included a 2-0 victory over No. 17 Rutgers on Friday. Head coach Carla Tagliente praised the squad’s defensive structure following the weekend’s matches, telling The Daily Princetonian, “I’m happy with our overall defensive presence and structure.” The Tigers now turn their attention to the Ivy League opener against Penn scheduled for Friday.

Penn State falls to 3-2 overall and 0-0 in Big Ten play following the hard-fought loss. The Nittany Lions will conclude their current home stand on Thursday, September 17, when they host Maryland at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex.
