Warsaw National Stadium Secures 2027 Showpiece
According to UEFA, the National Stadium in Warsaw was selected to stage the climax of European women’s club football in 2027. Opened ahead of the men’s UEFA EURO 2012 tournament—where it hosted five matches, including a semi-final—the venue boasts a proven track record of staging major international fixtures. Past marquee events at the stadium include the 2015 UEFA Europa League final and the 2024 UEFA Super Cup, according to UEFA records.
Prior to the Warsaw showcase, the 2026 UEFA Women’s Champions League final is scheduled to take place at the Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo in May, according to UEFA.
A New Format for European Women’s Club Football
The 2027 final will crown a champion under UEFA’s revamped women’s club competition structure, which launches in the 2025/26 season. According to UEFA, the updated format replaces traditional group stages with a single-league phase featuring 18 teams, an expansion from the previous 16-team setup.
Under the new qualification mechanics detailed by UEFA:
- The top four sides in the single-league phase qualify automatically for the quarter-finals.
- Teams finishing in 5th to 12th place advance to a two-legged knockout phase play-off to secure the remaining spots in the last eight.
- From the quarter-finals onward, the tournament follows a traditional knockout progression leading to the neutral-venue final.
Introduction of the UEFA Women’s Europa Cup
Alongside the primary Champions League changes, UEFA is launching a second women’s club competition: the all-knockout UEFA Women’s Europa Cup. According to UEFA, the new tournament allows additional teams to test themselves against continental opposition while offering a second path to glory for clubs eliminated in the early qualifying rounds of the Women’s Champions League.
The newly established Women’s Europa Cup final will be played over two legs on the same weekends as the Women’s Champions League semi-finals, according to tournament organizers.
