Four new operating rooms opened at Klinik Landstraße in Vienna, concluding a one-year construction project designed to expand surgical capacity within a 1970s hospital building, according to the Vienna Healthcare Group (Wiener Gesundheitsverbund).

Modernizing 1970s Hospital Infrastructure

The newly completed 1,000-square-meter surgical area required precise engineering to fit modern technical requirements into an existing building structure dating back to the 1970s, according to Michael Lischent, managing director of the Vienna Healthcare Group’s project development and construction management subsidiary (PBG). Specialists designed customized solutions for building movement joints and low floor assembly heights while installing a new ventilation center during ongoing hospital operations.

Planning for the space incorporated feedback from daily operating staff to establish short transit routes, distinct functional zones, dedicated storage, and designated patient waiting areas. Petra Ruso, head of nursing for the surgical department, noted that the rooms feature heated wall panels to provide extra warmth for staff standing in cooler airflow zones during lengthy procedures.

Surgical Capacity and Department Allocation

The four interdisciplinary rooms support flexible scheduling for various procedures, helping balance routine operations with urgent and emergency interventions, according to Peter Krafft, head of anesthesia and intensive medicine at the facility. Two adjacent suites primarily serve ophthalmology, facilitating logistics and training, while the remaining two spaces accommodate ear, nose, and throat (ENT) and dermatology procedures.

In 2025, surgical teams at Klinik Landstraße completed 14,269 total operations. Ophthalmology, ENT, and dermatology accounted for 6,123 of those procedures, aligning with the specialties designated to use the new ground-floor operating suites.

The opening at Klinik Landstraße forms part of a broader modernization program running from 2022 through 2027 to systematically update wards, outpatient clinics, and surgical spaces across the hospital. Recent milestones in the multi-year renovation effort include the completion of the facility’s oncology outpatient clinic in July 2025, with additional infrastructure updates scheduled through 2027.
