Comics Wave Film to Distribute Korean Animated Feature ‘Your Letter’ in Japan

Comics Wave Film, the distribution powerhouse behind Makoto Shinkai’s global hits Your Name and Suzume, is distributing the Korean animated feature Your Letter (縁の手紙) in Japan starting September 25.

A Strategic Shift for Comics Wave Film

For years, Comics Wave Film has focused on exporting the specific vision of a single director, Makoto Shinkai. By bringing Your Letter to Japanese audiences, the company is shifting its strategy to import and promote the work of another creator, director Kim Yong-hwan.

From Webtoon to Award-Winning Feature

The film originated as a ten-part summer special webtoon created by Cho Hyun-ah and published on Naver. Studio Rico and STUDIO N later adapted the story into a feature film. The plot centers on Sori, a girl who transfers to a rural school after experiencing bullying. While struggling to integrate, she discovers a hidden letter in her desk that prompts a search for its author. This journey leads her to Dongsun, a prickly classmate, as the two follow a trail of correspondence toward a hidden promise.

Before its Japanese release, Your Letter established a presence on the international festival circuit.

Voice Casting and Visual Appeal

Comics Wave Film has mirrored the original Korean casting strategy by employing high-profile talent for the Japanese dub. Yabuki Nako, an idol turned performer, makes her voice-acting debut as Sori, appearing alongside Ono Kensho and Umeda Shuichiro. This follows the precedent set by the original Korean version, which featured Lee Su-hyun of the duo AKMU in the lead role.

Japanese Release Schedule and Market Outlook

Your Letter will debut on September 25 at the Shinjuku Balt9 theater before expanding to a wider national rollout. This release comes approximately one year after the film’s initial theatrical run in South Korea via Lotte Entertainment.
