According to screenwriter Jeremy Adams in an interview with Comic Book Movie, the project was conceived from the outset as a three-part adaptation of the sprawling comic event that originally saw Bruce Wayne’s physical and psychological breaking point at the hands of the villain Bane.
Adapting a Massive DC Comics Crossover
Condensing hundreds of comic book issues into an 85-minute feature presented a massive hurdle for the production team, as Adams explained to Comic Book Movie. Having previously collaborated with producer Rick Morales on roughly 10 films, Adams took on the challenge of structuring the narrative launchpad. The sprawling source material required streamlining decades-old iconic sequences while honoring the tone set by writers like Chuck Dixon during his extensive work on the Batman office titles, Nightwing, Robin, and Bruce Wayne: Fugitive.
In the plot of Batman Knightfall – Parte 1, Bane initiates a mass breakout of Arkham Asylum, releasing Gotham City’s most dangerous criminals onto the streets. The ensuing rebellion pushes the Dark Knight to his physical and psychological limits as he attempts to recapture every escaped inmate with the tactical support of Nightwing and Robin.
The Arc of Azrael in Part Two
While the opening movie centers heavily on Bane’s calculated dismantling of Bruce Wayne, the narrative focus shifts dramatically for the sequel. Adams confirmed to Comic Book Movie that the second installment centers on Jean-Paul Valley, known as Azrael, who steps in to assume the mantle of Batman.
According to Adams’s interview with Comic Book Movie, Bruce Wayne delegates the role to Jean-Paul because being broken by Bane reinforces his understanding that operating as Batman poses a severe threat to the people he loves. By allowing Jean-Paul to take over—rather than turning to Dick Grayson—Bruce attempts to distance his surrogate family from the immediate danger, even if the decision carries a degree of emotional detachment.
