Eleven people, including a pregnant woman, were killed late Tuesday in a mass shooting after armed assailants stormed a home in the township of KwaMakhutha, south of Durban, South Africa. Three survivors remain hospitalized following the attack, which local leaders and residents describe as unprecedented in scale for the area.

According to local reports cited by eNCA, the attackers forced occupants into a single room before opening fire and setting a victim’s car ablaze. KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli confirmed the death toll, which includes an unborn child’s mother, and stated that the assault left the surrounding community in profound shock and grief.
Acting police chief Puleng Dimpane activated a 72-hour tracking operation to apprehend those responsible. Investigators reported that some victims were previously known to Crime Intelligence, and while a definitive motive remains unconfirmed, authorities are actively investigating potential links to gang violence and illegal firearms distribution.

Local leaders and residents have expressed acute distress over the scale of the violence. Ward councillor Thabisile Zungu stated that the township has never experienced an incident of this magnitude. Premier Ntuli noted that community members have raised urgent concerns regarding pervasive local drug markets and the proliferation of illegal weaponry across KwaZulu-Natal province.
“I’ve seen that the cruelty is showing a high level of anger, which is quite problematic in the province of KwaZulu-Natal for people if they are suspicious of drug involvement and also illegal firearms,” Ntuli said. Officials have urged residents with any relevant information to come forward to assist ongoing police inquiries.
