The Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini unveiled the 59th traditional opera season at the Teatro Pergolesi in Jesi, featuring four opera productions and one ballet scheduled between October and December. The program combines lesser-known historical titles with contemporary works and multidisciplinary art forms, according to details presented by theater leadership.
Program Lineup and Opening Schedule
The season opens on October 9 with Giacomo Puccini’s “Il trittico,” comprising “Gianni Schicchi,” “Suor Angelica,” and “Il Tabarro.” According to Artistic Director Cristian Carrara, the three-part work is staged as a single performance, a complex production mounted entirely by the theater. This follows a historical precedent set at the Teatro Pergolesi in 1971, when “Suor Angelica” received a rare autonomous staging within a traditional opera season. General Director Lucia Chiatti and Vice Mayor Samuele Animali noted during the launch event that the municipal tradition spans more than two centuries, emphasizing institutional accessibility and participation for individuals with diverse talents and disabilities.
Buffa Classics and Contemporary World Premieres
Gaetano Donizetti’s buffa masterpiece “Don Pasquale” follows on October 30 in a new production created in partnership with the Teatro di Novara, utilizing the Svoboda competition designs for sets and costumes. On November 14, the theater hosts the absolute premiere of the contemporary opera “L’esecuzione – sotto lo sguardo di Tosca,” featuring music by Salvatore Passantino and a libretto by Marco Malvaldi. Carrara explained that Malvaldi drew on his background as a baritono to craft a comedic libretto about a murder occurring while artists rehearse “Tosca.” The production is co-produced with the Teatro di Modena.
Verdi Production and Closing Ballet
The opera calendar concludes on December 11 with Giuseppe Verdi’s “Nabucco,” produced in collaboration with the Associazione Arena Sferisterio di Macerata and the Marche Region as a staging originally conceived for the Sferisterio di Macerata. The season wraps up on December 19 with the ballet “Querencia, dalla Scuola Bolera al Flamenco.” Technical partner Massimo Pigliapoco designed the graphic project, which features four illustrations by Pesaro artist Virginia Mori to visually represent each work in the lineup.
