Meta is developing a lightweight virtual reality glasses prototype weighing approximately 100 grams—about the weight of a deck of cards—designed to address the bulk and weight constraints of current headsets like the Meta Quest 3, according to company product announcements. The device shifts computing power, battery, and storage into a small external unit connected by an optical cable, while incorporating open sides and a passthrough camera system to let users maintain awareness of their physical surroundings.
Hardware Design and Ergonomics
The prototype eliminates the heavy head straps and onboard electronics typical of standalone headsets. By relocating processing hardware to an external puck that can clip to a pocket or bag, the glasses sit lightly on the face. The open-frame design and passthrough cameras allow wearers to view virtual screens or watch media without losing sight of their room, desk, or phone.
Display Technology and Cinematic Partnerships
Visual output relies on a 5K Infinite Display built on micro-OLED panels, delivering a pixel density of 37 pixels per degree paired with pancake lenses. The hardware supports Dolby Vision for contrast and color, alongside integrated Dolby Atmos spatial audio. Meta has secured IMAX Enhanced certification for the device, enabling an extended IMAX aspect ratio on select films at home. A partnership with Disney will bring 3D films and themed environments inspired by Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Disney+ subscribers in select regions.

Immersive Sports and Productivity Features
Beyond entertainment, Meta is targeting live events through a collaboration with ESPN called Immersive Sports. The platform will stream live events in up to 8K resolution with a 180-degree field of view, aiming for more than 100 live broadcasts annually with partners including MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports, and UFC. For productivity, the platform allows users to project multiple virtual screens into their field of view, turn a physical desk into a virtual keyboard and touchpad, or connect a Mac or Windows computer via USB-C or a wireless link while maintaining visibility of their physical workspace through the passthrough mode.
