MAVI Launches Talent Marketplace to Address US Accounting Shortage

MAVI emerged from stealth on Monday with a mandate to bridge the widening gap in the U.S. financial sector. Founded in 2023 by co-CEOs Molly Liu and Aman Puri, the talent marketplace connects domestic companies with international accounting professionals in a matter of days. The platform arrives as the U.S. accounting workforce faces a severe labor shortage compounded by an urgent demand for technology-fluent staff.

Breaking Barriers to International Recruitment

Local enterprises are struggling to secure the specialized expertise required to drive modern business growth. While some organizations avoid international hiring due to fears regarding quality or the administrative friction of cross-border employment, Liu argues the global market has shifted. “The global workforce now offers high-caliber talent that matches or exceeds U.S. standards,” she stated.

MAVI functions as a buffer against these operational complexities. By managing legal compliance, payroll, and international contracts, the platform allows U.S. firms to integrate full-time, long-term professionals directly into their in-house teams. The marketplace focuses exclusively on mid-level and senior-level placements to bolster existing finance departments.

Automation and the Changing Role of the Accountant

Drawing on her background at Ramp, Lyft, and Dropbox, Liu is skeptical that automation alone can solve systemic industry challenges. Artificial intelligence is expected to automate entry-level accounting tasks, a trend that threatens to constrict the pipeline of professionals moving into mid-level roles. As automated tools take over routine grunt work, the burden of advanced reasoning and judgment shifts squarely onto senior staff.

This evolution demands a new profile of accountant: one who balances traditional financial fundamentals with the ability to direct automated tools, integrate large language models, and oversee AI-native enterprise resource planning systems. Many traditional accountants lack the training required to review these AI-driven financial processes.

Market Traction and Early Adoption

The startup enters the market with significant backing, having secured a $4 million seed round led by Harlem Capital. MAVI currently hosts more than 3,000 accounting professionals and counts personal care company Athena Club among its enterprise clients.
