AstraZeneca files FDA application for lung cancer treatment Orpathys

AstraZeneca has formally submitted a regulatory application to the US Food and Drug Administration for Orpathys, also known as savolitinib, to treat specific adult patients with locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer. Developed in partnership with Hutchmed China and commercialized by AstraZeneca, the targeted treatment is designed for patients with EGFR mutations and MET overexpression or amplification whose disease has progressed following prior EGFR-targeted therapy.

Regulatory Filing Based on Phase III Saffron Trial Data

The FDA submission relies heavily on results from the global Phase III Saffron clinical trial. According to the filing data, the combination of Orpathys and Tagrisso demonstrated statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in both progression-free survival and overall survival when compared directly against standard platinum-based doublet chemotherapy.

Johnny Cheng, acting chief executive officer and chief financial officer of Hutchmed, stated that the filing represents an important step toward making the combination therapy available to patients in the United States. Cheng noted that the submission follows prior approval granted in China based on the Phase III Sachi study, highlighting a long-standing collaboration between Hutchmed and AstraZeneca aimed at tackling EGFR-mutated, MET-driven lung cancer progression.

Market Conditions and London Stock Exchange Open

The regulatory announcement accompanies a busy session on the London Stock Exchange, where the FTSE 100 was initially projected to open 0.3% higher at 10,713.98 points, while the British pound traded lower at 1.3242 USD compared to 1.3256 USD at the previous close. Corporate updates across the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 highlighted shifting financial strategies, acquisition developments, and ongoing regulatory provisions across multiple sectors.
